Obituary

Joy Del Hollowell, 84 passed away and joined her heavenly father on August 30, 2020. Joy was born April 13, 1936 in Ada, Oklahoma to John and Inez Hurst and was the youngest daughter of three children.

Growing up in Nebraska and Oklahoma, Joy loved horseback riding, swimming and being outdoors. She adored her older brother, Jim and followed him everywhere. She also loved to annoy her older sister, Helen as younger sisters do. Upon graduating from Northeast High School in Oklahoma City in 1954 Joy immediately went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company which was the beginning of a long and fulfilling career in the telephone industry eventually retiring from GTE.

Shortly after high school she married the love of her life Gerald Hollowell who preceded her in death after 47 wonderful years of marriage. Joy was a devoted Christian and a member of Oak View Baptist Church and always put God and family above herself. Her greatest pleasures were attending church and reading the Bible, but most of all she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She instilled strong family values and faith in her children and her unconditional love will forever be in their hearts. Joy brought immeasurable love and happiness to her grandchildren who will cherish the impact she had on their lives.

Joy was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; parents John and Inez Hurst; siblings Jim Hurst and Helen LaFevers. She is survived by: 3 children, David Hollowell and wife, Cheryl; Robin Petree and husband Ken; Sheila Gorman and husband Chris. 10 grandchildren: Matt Bower (Kylie); Jenny Bower (Stefan); Andrew Petree (Tara); Carmen Cleghorn (Dean); Mike Petree (Loree); Heather Petree; Eric Petree; Stephanie Trammell (Ryan); Laura Reichen (J.D.); and Bradley Gorman(Megan). 9 great grandchildren: Trent, Lexi, Grayson, Jonathan, James, Chatham, Kaeson, Kyle and Joseph.

We will be celebrating the life of Joy Hollowell in a private family graveside memorial service on Thursday, September 3rd at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens at 3:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oak View Baptist Church IMAGINE fund through their website: www.ovbc.net

Robin and Ken, please know that my prayers are with you and the family as you face the death of Joy. Even tho we know she is in a better place with a body that is whole again and that we will see her again, it is so hard to let go. May God show you peace by reminding you of the many, many beautiful memories you have of Joy.

Prayers, love and sympathy,
Ann Hayes

My grandma was always wanting to make her grandkids happy and make sure they had everything they wanted. So much so that one weekend, my mom and dad went on a weekend getaway and left me to stay with her. At that time I was 5ish and the ONLY thing I wanted was a kitten. My mom and dad told me that when they got back they would think about it, but that wasn’t good enough for me or grandma. Lol. While they were gone, she took me up to a pet shop and let me pick out a cat and bought it for me. Much to their surprise, when my parents got home I ran up to them and introduced Rosie, our new cat. When they questioned where it came from, Grandma said “well she really wanted one, so we went up and got her one”. Lol

My grandma did anything and everything for us. She truly raised us and took care of us. She spoiled us and loved us. She is the reason I am the way I am today. All the memories of me going to her house, going on walks, going to the movies, Getting hot fudge sundaes and spending the holidays with her and papa are all memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life and pass down to my kids.

Thank you grandma, for everything.
