Sarah Hamberger, age 91, passed away on June 25, 2020. She was born at St.
Paul Hospital in Dallas on September 15, 1928 to Joseph William Maloney and
Patsye MacDonald Maloney. Sarah grew up in Oak Cliff and attended Lida Hooe
and W.E. Greiner and was a 1946 graduate of Sunset High School. She enrolled
at Southern Methodist University where she met Navy veteran and SMU football
player, John Hamberger. They dated throughout the Mustangs back-to-back
championship seasons and married on March 31, 1949 at Highland Park
Methodist Church. John began his coaching career that included their moves to
Henderson, Kerrville, Grand Prairie and finally Irving, where they made their
home for 56 years and celebrated 69 years of marriage. Sarah was involved and
supportive of her children’s education and various school and community activities.
She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs,
book review club and garden club. An avid gardener, she took great pride in her
yard and unique plants. Sarah was also an ardent shopper. Following her retirement
from the Irving ISD, she and John enjoyed world-wide travels as well as vacation
adventures with family and friends. Sarah also remained a fan of SMU
football and attended games well into her 80s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 2017 and her brothers Bill
Maloney and Bob Maloney. Left to cherish Sarah’s memory are her son Steve;
and daughter Karen Schneider and husband Marvis. She was known as
“YeaYea” to granddaughters Rachel Evans and husband Jason; Sara Slesinger
and husband Michael; great grandsons William Evans, Joseph Evans, Max
Slesinger; her loyal buddy Mattie Belle; and longtime friends Murphy and Patsy

A private committal will be held at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. Due to COVID- 19 restrictions Sarah will privately be laid to rest at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery next to her husband John.
