Obituary for William "Bill" Hazen Walker

William “Bill” Walker, age 84, died on Thursday, November 28, 2019. Bill was born on August 1, 1935 in Richmond, Virginia to Hazen Elmo Walker and Augusta Bernadette (Wright) Walker. Bill was a man with an incredible work ethic and knew lots about everything. He loved working with his hands. Over his eighty-four years, he crafted fine leather items, made jewelry, painted (yes painted, he was a fan of Bob Ross), and built things you cannot imagine. Each of the children own a cradle designed by dad, rocking horse, cross, etc. If something needed to be oiled, fixed, sanded, clipped, planted, harvested, rewired, or tweaked he did it. He was always happy when one of us bought an old “new” house and perhaps the previous owners or builder had not had the finest craftsman skills. No worries, he could re-wire, change the belt, replace the plumbing or fence. He even had the chance to run telephone lines many years ago, in the good years for the Redskins. It was evident in all he did, he loved to work with his hands. His finest hour in his professional experience was when he had the chance to “tinker” at Bell labs. Bill was a man with a high school diploma and years of service in the U.S. Air Force. He did not attend college but given the opportunity he would have been an electrical engineer. He loved the Redskins in the good and bad years. After retirement he became the cook in the house. He would say “I got my experience, from my experience (meaning he learned from his mistakes). Bill’s salvation is credited to his sweet wife Janice and Dr. Bill Ryan. His wife was faithful in taking the kids to church and clung to her faith in the years when Bill was struggling to find his faith. In the end, Bill followed faithfully in those footsteps. Bill served proudly and honorably in the United States Air Force. He volunteered his time mentoring students with the Irving School District. Bill also ran a benevolence program at South MacArthur Church of Christ for ten plus years and served our church as an elder. Most of all, Bill loved his kids and grandkids with his whole heart and has left quite the legacy behind for them. Bill is preceded in death by his parents Hazen and Augusta, sister Helen, brother Sonny, and his loyal dog Sage. Left to cherish his memory are wife, Janice Walker of Irving, TX; brother Stuart Walker of Richmond, VA; children William Walker Jr. of Waldorf, Md., Sheryl Helms of Edenton, NC, Shannon Cole of Irving, TX, Shawn Walker of Irving, TX, Sharon Graber of Irving, TX; grandchildren William Walker III, Nick Walker, Rebecca Baker, Alexander Cole, Robert Baker, Micah Cole, Peyton Graber, Colby Volkmann, Bryce Graber, Kendall Volkmann, Priscila Pitti; great grandchildren Elijah A Quille, and Emma Grace Levens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Monday, December 2, 2019 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home, 707 North MacArthur Blvd., Irving, TX 75061. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm, on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Christ Church, 1750 E. Airport Freeway, Irving, TX 75061. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Irving Cares and Irving Schools Foundation.
