Obituary for Mozelle Wilson
Mozelle Wilson, 87, died Thursday, September 24, 2020, at Rowlett Health and Rehabilitation Center of complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. She had been a resident there since June 2019.
Mozelle was born July 18, 1933, in San Angelo, Texas, to Fannie Kate (Sims) and Robert S. Lawson. She was a graduate of San Angelo High School. She married Troy Joe Wilson on June 16, 1952, and they soon moved to the Dallas area. In 1957 they moved to Irving and made it their home.
Mozelle was a bright, witty, and talented woman with interests including drawing, painting, crafts, sewing, and creative writing. She had a curious mind and read and collected books on a wide range of topics. In the 1960s and 70s she was an avid and successful contester associated with the “Competriots” of Irving and with the Dallas area contesters organizations. She won many fabulous prizes, had great fun, and made lasting friendships.
She took good care of her family and was a wonderful wife and mother. She stayed home when her children were young but later went to work for the U.S. Postal Service. She worked there until her husband retired and they moved to Winnsboro, Texas, in 1988. They returned to Irving to live in 1999. She continued her creative writing as a member of The Irving Writers Connection. She wrote many poems and short stories and even completed a short novel that included locations and characters inspired by her hometown of San Angelo.
Alzheimer’s Disease began to slowly diminish her many exceptional abilities around 2012. She was cared for at home by her devoted husband Troy for as long as it was possible before moving to a nursing facility. On September 15 Mozelle experienced a sudden and severe decline in her health, and was placed under hospice care. Her family was permitted to be with her during her last days.
Mozelle was preceded in death by her parents, her son Joe, and her sister Bobbie Tate. She is survived by her husband Troy, her son Jay, her daughter and son-in-law Jane and Randy Cantrell, her granddaughter and her husband Catherine and Art “Frew” Schmidt, and great grandsons Roman and Axel Schmidt. Also surviving are her siblings Edward Lawson, Ector Lawson, Linda Hornow, Carolyn Nutt, and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws and extended family.
