Obituary for Louis Blaylock
The life of Louis Owens Blaylock Jr. will be celebrated by family and friends on Saturday, August 24, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the First Methodist Church Irving, 211 W. 3rd, Irving, TX. Louis, known far and wide as “Tooter”, died peacefully in his sleep on the evening of August 15, 2019.
Louis, born to Louis O. and Alice Blaylock on December 3, 1935, joined the soon-to-be legendry brood of Blaylock cousins, including twins Lloyd and Charles. Louis, Charlie, and Lloyd grew up as “brothers” who infamously ran the streets of Irving, and Cripple Creek, Colorado, breaking girls’ hearts and school sports records.
After graduating from Irving High School in the class of ’53, Louis attended Southern Methodist University where he played baseball and golf. Coached in golf from the time he was a toddler by his beloved DeeDa, he considered becoming a professional on the PGA circuit. His family lost count of the myriad amateur and club tournaments he won, usually by a landslide. Las Colinas Country Club members proudly bragged about Tooter’s two holes-n-one, a feat no one else accomplished during Louis’ decades of membership there.
All who knew Tooter are acutely aware of the fact that baseball and golf remained his lifelong passions. He could rattle off Texas Rangers stats starting with the first year the Rangers moved to Texas, and if he couldn’t watch the game on television, he listened on the radio, even if it meant sitting in a hot car waiting for Mary Lou or Andrea.
Giving back to his beloved community became an important part of Louis’ life, and his accomplishments in that arena are a major portion of his legacy. He was a co-founder of the much-needed Irving Community Hospital, now BSW Irving, and served as a relied-on member of the Board of Directors for many years. Other organizations that benefited from Louis’ expertise, commitment, and loyalty over his many years as an Irving resident were, Irving Bank and Trust, Irving Savings and Loan, Association of General Contractors, Irving Symphony League, Irving Rotary Club, and Irving YMCA.
Tooter loved to play games, and everyone wanted to be on his team. He was as good at Trivia as he was golf, and his antics when he played Charades brought everyone in the room to tears of laughter. And, when he was in mentor mode, he knew no peer. His nephew Andrew was the lucky recipient of Tooter’s mentorship on several fronts, including how to deploy the proper manners for the moment, and certainly, as his broker/partner in their real estate business, Hill & Blaylock.
Louis is preceded in death by his parents, sister, and cousins. Surviving Louis are his wife, Mary Lou, daughter Andrea, and niece Allison.
