Obituary for John "Papa John" Dixon

John Dixon, known lovingly by many as Papa John, of Little Rock, Arkansas (2 years) formerly Irving, TX (65 years), peacefully passed away Saturday, November 9, 2019. Born in Rosston, Arkansas on Saturday, July 10, 1926, he was the oldest son of Willie and Eunice Lowry Dixon, and in his 93 years John was loved and adored by many.

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan where he served aboard a minesweeper ship the USS Ptarmigan. Upon leaving the Navy, John and the love of his life, Mary Remele, placed roots in Irving, Texas where he began working at Southwestern Bell as a Telephone Installer. He retired in 1988, after dedicating 36 years to the company. John was a longtime and dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church in Irving, where he was a member of the Wednesday Workday Crew for many years.

After retirement, John and Mary continued their love of traveling by seeing the country in their motorhome, gathering friends and stories along the way. Among their favorite places, they spent many winters in the “Valley” of Texas square dancing, and many fall months in Branson, MO. John was a 60 plus years member of the Hella Shriner Temple and the Irving Masonic Lodge 1218 A.F.&A.M.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Eunice Dixon; sisters Estalene Martin and Shirley Dixon; brother Bill Edd Dixon; wife Mary Remele Dixon; and daughter Janet Sue Dixon.

Those left to cherish his memory include son Tom Dixon and wife Anne of Cedar Hill, TX; sisters, Eula Beth Ward of Hope, Arkansas and Nelwyn Jetton of Metairie, Louisiana; grandchildren Lindsey Green and husband Bryce of Little Rock, Joshua Miller and wife Billie Joy of Waco, TX, Jonathan Badry and wife Sarah of Oklahoma City, OK, Jared Miller and wife Brianna of Conroe, TX, and Lara Miller of Mesquite, TX; great-grandchildren Gracen Green, Harper Green, Ryleigh Adams, Brannon Miller, Avonlea Miller, Jaxton Miller and Roman Miller.

Visitation will be from 3:30 to 5:00pm on Sunday, November 17th at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home, 707 North MacArthur Blvd. in Irving, Texas. Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 18, 2019 at 10:00am in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, 211 West Third Street in Irving, TX. An interment with Military Honors will immediately follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, 1413 East Irving Blvd in Irving, TX.
