Obituary for John A. Dickey

John Anthony Dickey entered this world on March 19, 1946, in Mounds, OK, and accepted his promise of Eternal Life on August 27, 2020. He was born in Mounds, Oklahoma, to L. J. and Nora Wilson Dickey and the family moved to Texas during his early years to live in the Keller area. He graduated from Keller High School in the Class of 1965. John answered the call of his country and served in the U. S. Army from 1966-68. He then returned to Texas to begin his career path that led to the insurance industry. On March 20, 1982, he and Nancy Alexander were joined in marriage. John retired from American General (AIG) in 2008 and spent his retirement enjoying traveling with family and friends as well as serving in various volunteer positions. A special delight was enjoying time in the Ozarks and the beauty of Table Rock Lake. He was a driver for patients at Baylor-Scott & White Hospital, donated 60+ gallons of blood to Carter BloodCare, delivered meals though Meals on Wheels, and served with Texas Baptist Men’s disaster relief team. John proclaimed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and served in many capacities through the preschool, children’s, and missions ministries at Plymouth Park Baptist Church. Many memories have been created with John’s ever-expanding circle of family and friends. Of special enjoyment were times spent traveling and sharing life with his and Nancy’s “posse” dubbed The Apple Dumplin’ Gang. Even the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s did not dampen John’s thirst for an adventure, card game, or opportunity to just hang out with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed cruises and cross-country camping travels, creating many memories along the way. Life always seemed to be his to enjoy. John set the bar high for dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and all its challenges with his unfailing good nature and irrepressible smile. Surviving to cherish memories are his wife, Nancy, of Irving, his son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Kim Dickey, of Panama City, FL, daughter and daughter-in-law, Robin and Beth Hart of Mansfield, Texas, and grandchildren, Gabrielle and James Dickey of Panama City, FL. Also surviving are his brother and sister-in-law, R. L. and Teresa Dickey of Weatherford, Texas, brother-in-law, Bill Roten of Haltom City, TX, and aunt, Betty Shanks of Bixby, OK, along with a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents, L. J. and Nora Dickey, his in-laws, William and Marie Alexander, and his sister, Helen Roten.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, September 14, at Plymouth Park Baptist Church, 1714 North Story Road, Irving, TX. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, in the Marshfield Cemetery in Marshfield, MO.

In lieu of flowers, John would prefer a donation to the Texas Baptist Men so the work that gave him so much satisfaction can be supported. Donations may be sent to Texas Baptist Men, 5351 Catron, Dallas, Texas 75227.
