Obituary for Charles Shelander

Charles (Charlie) Henry Shelander, 94, of Olean, New York passed away on October 6, 2019, due to complications from pneumonia.
Charlie is survived by his daughter Patricia McGraw and her husband Daniel McGraw, Olean, NY; his son Chuck Shelander and his wife Darlene Shelander, Irving, TX; and stepson Geoffrey Mather and his wife Diane Mather, Simsbury, CT.
Charlie was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend to everyone.
Charlie married Ann Marie Ceci, also of Olean, NY in 1947. She passed away in 1978. In 1980, he married Phyllis Mather, and they were together until her passing in 2014.
He moved to Texas to be closer to his son in November, 2014, and resided at the Remington, an independent living community in Valley Ranch, TX.
Charlie was an avid golfer, and won many amateur golf tournaments in the Olean, NY area. He also loved traveling. During retirement, he and Phyllis Mather Shelander lived in North Myrtle Beach, SC, Las Cruces, NM and Sierra Vista, AZ.
He worked as a train car inspector and repair specialist for the Pennsylvania Railroad during the 1940s and 50s. He also was a phone operator for The Vanderhorst Corporation in North Olean, NY, until his retirement in 1980.
Charlie served his country proudly as an Air Force private in World War 2, where he repaired allied airplanes in southern Italy. He was a member of the American Legion for many years.
A Memorial Service is being held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Olean, NY in November. Charlie will be laid to rest at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany, NY. Please check back at the end October for updated service date and times.
